A Girl's Guide to Valentine's Day!

A Girl's Guide to Valentine's Day!

Three of my favorite movies involve women who are single and are desperately wanting to be in a relationship. All of them involve scenes where they are crying, listening to music, and/or chugging back some wine. They are lamenting over the fact that they are single. In the end, of course, they find that they don't need a man, finally see their self-worth, and yet somehow still end up with the loves of their lives. What if the movie ended with just finding the first two?

Though these scenes provide comedic relief as well as relatability, I am choosing to embrace my single life. There is nothing wrong with being in a relationship (so don't get me wrong), but that's not where I'm at with life right now. {They say write what you know...}

This Valentine’s Day I am celebrating love in all forms: self-love as well as love for my friends and family. Not to sound super cheesy, but I truly believe in the power of love. Sure, yes, I hope to fall in love someday and settle down and have a family. However, right now I’m not worried about that. I will admit I used to be worried about not being in a relationship; I wanted so terribly to have a boyfriend, however, now it’s different. I have fallen in love with being single. I’m "alone", not lonely—there’s a difference. I enjoy being by myself just as much as I love being social with others. I have no problem eating out or seeing a movie by myself. In fact, I tell people (whether they're in a relationship or not) to try it. I think it's healthy to be okay being by yourself. Though, there are extremes for everything we do, it's all about finding that balance: the balance of being alone and being with others. You just have to figure out what works best for you.

I love my friends and my family; they fill my life so much, that I don’t feel empty or that I’m missing something. That full feeling I have is my wish for everyone, whether you’re single or not. I'm not going to sugar coat it for you, it takes time to build these everlasting relationships. Maintaining them also requires a lot of things, but I think patience, love, and understanding are the three most valuable. Working on self love has also improved a lot of my relationships!

Valentine’s day is a holiday where candy companies, Hallmark, and fancy restaurants make a ton of money, but why make it exclusive for just couples? I'll drop some money for myself and the people closest to me! Why not celebrate all the loves in our lives? Galentine’s day is quite popular, which is great, but why celebrate on a different day? On the actual day let’s celebrate ourselves and our friends and family—and if you do have a significant other, well then there’s more love to add to the day! Let’s actually make the day about LOVE plain and simple. Doesn't matter who you are or what you believe: JUST LOVE! It’s not just romantic love, but all kinds of love. I feel like I’m about to quote Hugh Grant from Love Actually when he’s talking about how love can be found anywhere, "that love actually is all around". Okay I quoted him, I couldn't help myself. You all know the part!

Here's your Hugh Grant GIF to go with your Hugh Grant reference! Can you tell I love GIFs? {I may have a problem}

I’m going to treat myself and others on this special day. AND when I see a couple who are madly in love or just hardcore all about the PDA, instead of rolling my eyes in disgust, I will celebrate them. (They don’t have to know that I’m celebrating them, but in my head I’ll remain positive.) After all, you can’t be negative and love at the same time. Better yet, instead of just having this mindset only on the holiday, we should all be trying to be better at loving one another everyday. I’m single and having the time of my life! I know some day I will celebrate this holiday with someone special, but until then I am happy to buy myself some chocolate and wine!
