The Dressy Tee
A major staple to have in your closet is a basic tee...in every neutral color that looks good on you. Brown looks awful on me so that's the only color I don't own. I have tees in white, grey, black, and navy blue. This is a good starting place when building your closet. If you're purging your closet do not get rid of these essential shirts. Also take inventory of what colors you don't have yet. Currently I'm expanding my basic tee collection to more fun colors, but in this post you will just see a few of the essential neutral colored tees. Why are they so essential? They are not only perfect for everyday use (the more casual looks) but can be easily dressed up! Hence the title of this post!! The best way to build your closet is by investing in a basic wardrobe first! And when I mean basic, I don't mean how the term is used today i.e "you're so basic". Basic in this sense means classic looks that will never go out of style and will serve your wardrobe in the best way possible. (I will be starting a basic wardrobe series starting in the fall--it will outline all of the basic essentials you need for each season) But until then, let's talk about dressing up the tee.
Step 1: For what occasion are you wearing this outfit? This will determine if you can get by with wearing a dressed up tee or you need to go dressier.
Step 2: What is the main focus of your outfit? Hint: it's not the T-shirt, but rather what you're putting with it. Not everything looks great with a T-shirt no matter how well you accessorize. For example, my overalls below could have been dressed up even more with a cute, white, off the shoulder shirt. However, wearing the tee, doesn't take away from the dressiness of the overalls, it only compliments it. It also gives me the option to pair it with wedges or my Adidas like I did below. This outfit would be perfect for a date, brunch, or any kind of shower.
Step 3: (It's not really a step, but more a rule of thumb) If it's an oversized tee, pair it with skinny jeans or something form fitting to the lower half of your body. It's all about proportions! If you wear an oversized tee with a pair of boyfriends jeans, it's no longer a semi-dressy outfit, it's now casual. I stock up on both oversized tees and true-to-size tees depending on what you're pairing with them. Notice all three tees on this post are true-to-size tees.
Step 4: (It's also another rule) Don't wear sports bras with your dressy tee outfits. Wear your nicest bra or a bralette. *Don't be afraid to wear a fun a dark or bright color underneath a white tee*
Step 5: Shoes and accessories! Just how you would dress up any other outfit, add fun accessories and nice shoes to help up your game even more.
I love this outfit because of how cool it is. The skirt and the lightness of the tee is perfect for a hot summer day. I have worn this skirt before (you can find it on my insta as one of my #ootd) as a much dressier outfit and it was perfect for the occasion. Pairing it with a tee, makes the shirt dressier, but the whole outfit easy to wear to almost anything. (a great travel outfit for sure!)
One of my favorite trends is adding a pair of heels to a nice pair of shorts. **Definitely don't go all stiletto with the heel, something around 3 inches would suffice. I love the look because it's a great way to show off your legs, I'm not really much of a short skirt person (I always feel like I'm going to flash someone), and this look can be easily dressed down with a pair of sandals or nice sneakers when my feet start to hurt. This t-shirt is slightly bigger on me so I decided to tie it off to the side. I would definitely suggest doing this if you want to dress up an oversized tee.
Probably one of my favorite outfits ever! Why??? It's one of those words I use quite often: COMFORTABLE...as heck! Like I said above I could totally add some fun heels or wedges to this outfit and it's dressed up even more. However, I also believe that dressier outfits can be paired with nice sneakers--I do it all the time actually! **Sidenote: when you don't have a cute bag to pair with an outfit find some fresh flowers to either hold or place it in your hair! It adds a great pop of color. (and makes for a cute insta pic) Plus if you're going to a party what a great gift to bring!
I hope these pointers can help you when getting dressed this week. Look at your closet. How can you incorporate a basic tee into what you're wearing without compromising the dressiness of your outfit! Keep it simple and don't overthink it. Have fun with your closet--it should be your best friend, not your mortal enemy.
